Zumba…It’s the newest fitness craze that has people dancing up a storm. Zumba is a cardio fitness program that uses Latin and African inspired dance moves to shape people up. Just like any other workout, there are pros and cons. What are they? Read on…
Pros of Zumba.
Well, let’s start with the fact that it has you moving constantly and can burn a lot of calories in an hour workout. How many depends on your fitness level and how intensely you work, but some experts say you can burn almost 470 in an hour. Another pro, it’s a fun workout. Anyone who exercises on a regular basis know that boredom is killer to anyone’s routine. You get bored, you don’t work as hard and the benefits start to stall. Granted any exercise, even a half-hearted attempt is better than none, but get bored and find out exactly how fast you make excuses to not do it!
Next, it will boost your mood. This is for a couple of reasons, one being the release of endorphins that you get when you exercise. The other is that this fitness craze helps you shed pounds. Who doesn’t feel better when the weight is coming off!
The last benefit is that many of these are given in group fitness classes. Helps you socialize, and it may even give you that “I can do this better than her” competitive streak that boosts your performance and gets you exercising on a higher level.
Cons of Zumba.
There are some! Let’s start with that group environment. Some people find that group fitness classes are intimidating. If you’re out of shape and overweight, exercising right next to someone in great shape, or worse yet following that skinny peppy instructor, can make you feel even worse about how you look.
Another is the scheduling of classes. Many health clubs only offer them to their members, and if you don’t belong to a health club, finding an open class can be a challenge.
So, buy it from one of those infomercials… except that has its own challenges of cost and sticking with it on your own. A big con is the fact that it is fast paced and the steps can be difficult to learn and master. If you are older, out of shape, have physical limitations or uncoordinated, you may have difficulty keeping up.
